Commonwealth Games Road Races

Glasgow came out on the last day of a fabulous 2014 Commonwealth Games to spur on the ladies and men taking part in the cycling road races.

The race started and finished at Glasgow Green, crossing through the city centre and out towards Byers Road.

The ladies' race came first with the cyclists covering seven laps of the course. The weather held out for the ladies, but by the start of the men's race the showers of rain were becoming heavier and more prolonged.

Half way through the race Glasgow showed the competitors what a shower of rain really is, and by the end of the twelve laps only a dozen of the riders were still racing. By this time my camera had been put away and I saw the winner crossing the line from the dryness of my own home.

Commonwealth Games marathon race

Over fifty athletes from around the Commonwealth took to the streets of Glasgow to take part in the men's and women's marathon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Thousands of spectators came out to give their support and cheer on the runners as they made their way twice round the 13 mile course.

The greatest crowds were in the city centre, while some of the further out parts of the city seemed almost deserted.

Commonwealth Flotilla

The River Clyde was awash with colour as 250 boats joined the Commonwealth Flotilla, sailing from Greenock to Glasgow as part of the celebrations for the 2014 Commonwealth games.

Small cabin cruisers and tall ships all formed a procession up the river with Calmac ferry Lochinver at the front.

The boats were decked out with bunting and the crews looked to be enjoying thier time in the limelight as the crowds gathered on the shore to cheer them on their way.

Commonwealth Baton

After having traveled around the world, the Commonwealth baton is almost withing touching distance of Glasgow.

The baton bearers were given the honour of taking the beautifully crafted baton through the  streets of Inverclyde, stopping off at selected local landmarks.

The relay will finish at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games on 23rd July in Glasgow.
